Todd C. Zion, Ph.D.
President, Co-founder & CEO
Dr. Zion developed the SmartInsulin technology as part of his doctoral thesis work in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At M.I.T., Todd won the Robert P. Goldberg Grand Prize in the 2003 M.I.T. $50K Entrepreneurship competition. Prior to enrolling at M.I.T., he worked as a polymer development engineer at Eastman Kodak, where he invented and was issued several patents for the novel synthesis of polymer particles for imaging applications. Todd graduated from Cornell University summa cum laude with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering
Alan Watson, Ph.D, M.B.A
Vice President of Business Development
Alan Watson brings almost 25 years of research and development, commercial and executive experience in the biotech and life sciences industries. He has served as Chief Business Officer and EVP at Elixir Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Sr. VP, Corporate Development at Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Sr. VP, Intellectual Property and Licensing at Nycomed Amersham plc., and before that held senior management positions at Nycomed AS, Salutar, Inc. and scientific positions at DuPont Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Watson received his B.Sc. from the University of N.S.W., Sydney, Australia; his Ph.D. in Bioinorganic Chemistry from the Australia National University; and his MBA from Northeastern University.
Thomas M. Lancaster, Ph.D.
Vice President of Research and Development
Dr. Lancaster received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was a NSF Graduate Fellow and an Elf Autochem Fellow. Tom’s thesis research included reactor and catalyst design for pharmaceutical synthesis. Before entering M.I.T., he was a Research Engineer at Union Carbide Corporation where he designed modeling applications for screening extraction solvents for optimal plant separations. Tom graduated with high distinction from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering.
Michael A. Tyo, Ph.D.
Vice President of Manufacturing
Dr. Tyo has played an active role in the management in a variety of biotechnology companies, having served recently as Vice President of Manufacturing and Quality at ConjuChem Biotechnologies in Montreal and Vice President of Manufacturing and Product Development at Point Therapeutics in Boston. In 1991-1992 he was a Rockefeller Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, developing vaccine production technologies for developing nations. He received his PhD in Biochemical Engineering at MIT, where he investigated the biochemical dynamics of hybridoma cells grown at high density in perfusion bioreactors. He earlier received an MS in Biochemical Engineering and a BS in Biology at MIT.
James M. Herriman
Vice President of Operations
Mr. Herriman has co-founded and been a member of the senior management teams for several successful technology companies. Jim was Vice President of Product Development at Neuromedical Systems, Inc. (NSI) where he played a key role in growing this start-up to a $100 million NASDAQ IPO and world-wide rollout of its system for improving the accuracy of Pap smear screening. He was also a co-founder and President of Aspex Incorporated, a supplier of high performance computing systems for research and industrial applications. Jim received his B.A. in Philosophy from Emory University.
